Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, warns about a new form of extortion targeting mobile application platforms. Malicious individuals insert illegal content (pornography) into public chats, using sophisticated techniques to make it invisible to users and difficult for traditional moderation systems to detect. They then report this content directly to Apple, threatening to have the application removed from the App Store if group owners do not pay a ransom.

This incident, which led to Telegram's temporary removal, reveals two major risks: the ability of extortionists to manipulate app distribution giants like Apple into overreacting without prior warning, and the evolving tactics of extortion that endanger all online communities hosting user-generated content. Durov highlights the effectiveness of Telegram's moderation, forcing attackers to resort to technical subterfuge, but insists on the need for all platforms to remain vigilant and strengthen their defenses.
